iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus Announced

It was the announcement we have all been waiting for. Throughout the various leaks and rumours, Apple has kept quiet about its newest product line - until now. The Apple Special Event held on 12 September at the new Steve Jobs Theater, Apple Parks, commemorated the founder and pioneer of Apple with an emotional opening dedication to Steve Jobs before enticing its audience with announcements of its newest products.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are the newest commercially available smartphones from Apple. Retaining the iPhone 7’s sleek design, the front and rear durable glass compliment the aluminium edges and allow for wireless charging. Apple have opted for Qi wireless charging, commenting that they are willing to support both Qi and wireless integrators to expand the use of wireless charging in future technologies. The iPhone 8 design is also waterproof (splash-proof) and dustproof, promoting the iPhone 8 as the most durable model in the Apple range.

The 4.7 inch retina display for the iPhone 8 and a 5.5 inch display for the iPhone 8 Plus boast True Tone, a wide colour gamut and 3D touch for a screen that adapts to its surroundings, provides the widest range of colour and monitors screen pressure for a more accurate touch response. Unlike rival manufacturer Samsung, the iPhone 8 hasn’t opted for edge-to-edge display, however this has been integrated into future model iPhone X.

One of the most exciting features for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are most definitely the cameras. The iPhone 8 features a 12MP camera with an improved sensor, new colour filters, image stabilisation and a 7MP front camera for more poignant selfies. The iPhone 8 Plus features 12MP dual rear cameras – one telephoto camera and one wide-angle lens to enable optical zoom and a stunning portrait mode, with portrait lighting to mimic studio images and light. This, alongside the ability to shoot video in 4K, slo-mo and time-lapse modes, it begs the question “who needs a camera?”

Both iPhone 8 models include Apple’s new A11 Bionic chip, which it claims is the most powerful chip to have ever been integrated into a smartphone. With 4 efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster than the previous A10 Fusion chip, the iPhone 8 can easily run several applications at once without interference. Better efficiency equals quicker, sharper graphics, performance and allows for augmented reality (AR) apps and games to run at full speed.

In short, in comparison with the most recent iPhone 7 model, the iPhone 8 is one step ahead with Qi integration and an improved A11 Bionic chip and the iPhone 8 Plus shows vast improvements with its dual cameras. Overall, not a huge surge forward – that’s being left to the iPhone X.
