UV protection is something that we’re all aware of. Gone are the days are lying in the sun slathered in oil or roasting away under a tanning bed. Most skincare products, sunglasses and now even clothing ranges contain some form of UV protection. Now it’s the turn of wearable tech to jump on the bandwagon and lend us a hand when it comes to protecting our skin.
Renowned skincare brand L’Oréal is well versed in both protecting and reversing the effects of damage to our skin. Now they want to use wearable technology to prevent this damage further.
UV Sense is a tiny wearable tracker to help you take better care of your skin. Launched at this year’s CES event under L’Oréal’s brand La Roche-Posay, the UV Sense is a round device just 9 millimetres across and small enough to stick onto your thumbnail. Favouring NFC (near-field communication) connectivity, the UV Sense doesn’t require a large battery and therefore doesn’t need charging. The adhesive can apparently last for 2 weeks whilst the battery could last for a few months, making the re-usable UV Sense a more environmentally friendly solution.
Connected to an app on your phone, the UV Sense uses NFC to feedback information regarding your environment, including pollution, allergen levels, humidity and most importantly UV exposure. Whether you’re on the beach, out for a leisurely stroll or just sitting in your garden, the UV Sense can warn you when it’s time to head under the shade or make your way indoors. The UV Sense works towards preventing skin damage caused by UVA and UVB rays, helping you to retain your youthful skin for as long as possible.
L’Oréal’s UV Sense will be sold with limited availability in 2018, with a wider rollout in 2019. Prices are expected to start from around $40 USD.
